Happy Wednesday, everybody. Max here with your fix of gaming news.
First up, a spoiler warning for anybody who hasn't played The Last of Us Part Two, watched season two of the HBO series, or had the events spoiled for them. Troy Baker, who played Joel in The Last of Us, believes we haven't seen the last of the character. He told Eurogamer he hopes Pedro Pascal isn't the last to play Joel and wants to see the character iterated on in multiple mediums like TV, film, more games, or comic books. Baker stated, "I definitely know we've not seen the last of Joel, whether that be Naughty Dog or somebody else." This could mean Joel's story might be retold in another medium, or there could be another game in The Last of Us universe. While Joel is dead, he has appeared in flashbacks, and a prequel is always a possibility. Naughty Dog Studio head and The Last of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann hinted at "a few stops that remain on the road ahead" in a recent social media post. Personally, I'm content without more retellings of The Last of Us and would prefer new characters if more stories are made in that universe. In the meantime, Naughty Dog is working on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
Speaking of beloved video game characters, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto commented on whether the Super Mario Galaxy movie's new spin on a character will carry over to future games. Another spoiler warning for those who haven't seen the Super Mario Galaxy movie. The movie reveals that Peach is the sister of Rosalina, and both were born from stardust. They were separated young, with Peach sent to the Mushroom Kingdom for safety, where Toads raised her to be their queen. Miyamoto has historically avoided strict canon for the Mario universe to prevent creative constraints. He told Nintendo Dream Web that too many character settings can limit game development. However, he now finds it fun to expand on characters through the movie and wants to adhere to the movie's settings in future games as much as possible. Therefore, Peach is officially a celestial being.
Finally, a public service announcement: the trailer for Coyote vs. Acme is out. This hybrid live-action animated film features Wile E. Coyote suing Acme for his backfiring inventions, with John Cena playing Acme's lawyer. The film almost never saw the light of day, as Warner Bros. announced in 2023 they would shelve the nearly completed film as a tax write-off. This was a miserable situation for those who worked on it and those who wanted to see it. The outlandish premise has been on my radar for years, and seeing a bit of the finished product at San Diego Comic-Con last year only increased my desire to support it, especially knowing it almost didn't get released. The movie hits theaters on August 28th.
