Cell-level certification alone is often a red flag, as even cheap cells have UL listings, and it doesn't guarantee cell quality or battery build. Pack-level certification (UL1973) ensures the entire battery is certified, guaranteeing consistent hardware and build quality, though it doesn't cover software updates. This is common for 48V batteries but rare and expensive for 12V. System-level certification (UL9540) is for the entire system (batteries, inverters, connections) and is required for grid-tied systems, ensuring safety and functionality. It's crucial to distinguish UL9540 from UL9540A, which is only a fire propagation test. For inverters, UL741 is the main standard, but for grid connection or home insurance, UL9540 is essential. DIY battery boxes are preferred over raw cell systems due to safety concerns.
