Sony PlayStation UK has recently come under scrutiny for implementing age verification measures, which critics argue are actually identity verification attempts disguised to ease public acceptance. Sony is outsourcing this identity handling to Yoti, a digital identity company that has previously been fined by the Spanish Data Protection Agency for unlawfully processing biometric data and failing to comply with data storage limitation requirements. This raises concerns about the security and privacy of user data. Lewis Rossman, a critic, points out that this "age verification" is a misnomer designed to make the process more agreeable to the public. He argues that such measures create an infrastructure that could allow governments to control who can and cannot use personal computers, which he deems a dangerous precedent. The term "age verification" sounds innocuous and boring, making it easier for regulators to introduce such policies without significant public resistance.
