Neation reflected on his initial thesis for Open Door compared to his experience running the company. He noted two significant upsides: the company's underlying models, databases, and processes were in much better structural shape than he anticipated, suggesting a dedicated team had maintained its core despite prior challenges. Secondly, he vastly underestimated the "attach opportunity"—the potential for offering ancillary services alongside home transactions. Conversely, the main downside he observed was the extensive reliance on outside consultants, which led to "stupid" and misdirected operational expenses (opex), with decision-makers having little stake in the outcomes. This has since been addressed, with a focus on internal efficiency.
